Almost all of aircrew will contract some form of illness during their active professional years. 60,375 patients were referred to our hospital in 1956-1990. Diagnoses were established and aeromedical disposition were made. 2,527 cases were permanently grounded from flying status in that period. The leading causes for grounding were syncope, gastritis, gastric and pepticulcer, neuroses, hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary heart disease, headache, aerotitis media, mal-endurance to acceleration, hepatitis, air-sickness, anomalies of refraction, sensorineural deafness, and Meniere's disease. More research work should be done in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, neurological diseases and diseases of sense organs, ear and eye.
